The Power of a Hashtag

I am sure that most of you know what the hash (#) symbol is all about and how it is used in social media. If not, let me give you a little introduction –

A hashtag is a word or string of words (I call them string because #YouCantPutSpaceBetweenTheWords) prefixed with a symbol called the hash (#) or more commonly known as the number sign.

Hashtag in social media allows you to view similarly “tagged” words. For example, you type #Canada, your device will return all messages that contain your hashtag, wherever or whenever it was posted.

Hashtag has become very important in social media marketing in many ways. I am giving you three reasons why:

  1. Hashtags build a community of like-minded individuals. Have you ever heard of Tribes by best-selling author, Seth Godin? Godin in his book describes a tribe as “a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea. For millions of years, human beings have been part of one tribe or another. A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.”

Imagine the possibilities for your brand, for your company. All you need to is to find your tribe and the power of the hashtag will give you a way to communicate with them.

  1. Hashtags is a limitless, borderless promotional tool for your brand. One person talking about your brand is great. Ten people would be so much better. How about a whole community of hundreds or thousands of people talking about your brand. What promotion could be better than this? All because of this simple symbol – the hash (#).
  2. Hashtags provide real-time action and updates. #RobinWilliams #WorldCup #Ebola #Haiyan – what do these have in common? These are the biggest news of 2014 and with the power of the hashtag, everyone who has access to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and all other platforms that allow the use of the hashtag was able to get real-time news and updates. In times of crises, the hashtag revolution has also allowed us to respond faster than ever before.

The world has become smaller because of social media and has even become more targeted because of the hashtag. It has connected people to share their thoughts, their laughter, tears, even anxiety, all at the same time despite the time difference from all over the world. But while there are many other positive sides of hashtags, it has also been subjected to abuse. Many brands have created a ‘hashtag overkill’ whenever they promote a product. Twitter, for example, issues warnings of using hashtags correctly and to avoid over-tagging as this can be considered spamming.

The proper use of hashtags and planning how it is executed can be a great marketing tool for businesses. Such is the power that this little symbol carries that you need expertise and experience on how to maximize its use because hashtags like any other marketing tool can either make or break your brand.
